Outreach efforts nurture spiritual growth and social cohesion, supporting harmony in Greater Wellington and New Zealand.

Masjid: Center of Faith and Togetherness

A Masjid (mosque) is known as an Islamic center for prayer and worship. The word Masjid is derived from the Arabic word Sajada (سَجَدَ), meaning to prostrate, making a Masjid (مَسْجَد) a place of prayer. Muslims are united there for Salah (prayer), community activities, and education. A Mihrab (niche) is featured for the Imam (prayer leader), and a minaret is often included for the call to prayer. During prayer, the Kaaba in Mecca is faced, with the Imam leading from the Mihrab.

At Taubah (سورة التوبة) - Quran 9:18

The mosques of Allah are inhabited by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, pay alms (charity/zakat), and fear none but Allah. Such people can be expected to be among those who take the right path.

The people who should rightfully build mosques are those who believe in Allah and the last Prophet. They establish prayer, give zakat, and fear no one except Allah. This reflects the orderly function of the masjid: it begins with iman, focusing on faith in Allah and the Last Day. The masjid becomes a place of reminder, where salah is established, and the community gathers. It helps identify those who deserve zakat and serves as a community centre, offering spiritual and communal strength. These are the people considered guided.

These verses teach us the spirit of building an Islamic Center. Today, there is a beautiful proliferation of mosques, but the intention and vision behind them must be clear. An Islamic Center should be a place to remember Allah, heal people spiritually, foster community, and help those in need. When built with these intentions, the Mosque feels alive, and the intention can be felt through its walls.
